Dead is just a word. Four years ago, 13-year-old Finney (Mason Thames) killed his abductor and escaped, becoming the sole survivor of The Grabber (Ethan Hawke). But true evil transcends death … and the phone is ringing again. The Black Phone 2 follows Finn, now 17, who struggles with life after his captivity. The headstrong 15-year-old Gwen (Madeleine McGraw) begins receiving calls in her dreams from the black phone and seeing disturbing visions of three boys being stalked at a winter camp known as Alpine Lake. Thames breaks down his character Finney’s journey between films in the new featurette.
Determined to solve the mystery and end the torment for both her and her brother, Gwen persuades Finn to visit the camp during a winter storm. There, she uncovers a shattering intersection between The Grabber and her own family’s history. Together, she and Finn must confront a killer who has grown more powerful in death and more significant to them than either could imagine.
Black Phone 2 writer and director Scott Derrickson returns with writing partner C. Robert Cargill for this sequel, based on characters created by Joe Hill.
Synopsis
“As Finney, now 17, struggles with life after his captivity, his sister begins receiving calls in her dreams from the black phone and seeing disturbing visions of three boys being stalked at a winter camp known as Alpine Lake.”
As he did with Sinister (2012), Derrickson grabs our attention with The Black Phone (2021) and holds us until the inevitable conclusion. It’s how the pieces fit together in the end that demonstrates Derrickson’s mastery of craft and eye for detail. His adaptation of Joe Hill’s short story is brilliant and effectively evokes the unease of the ‘stranger danger’ era. While the film can feel slow-building at first, the pacing is thoughtful and deliberate.
This chapter sets the stage for a deliciously sinister and far more terrifying experience than its predecessor. The Black Phone 2 is set to release theatrically on October 17, 2025. Get your tickets early — view show times for screenings in your area.
